KDP printing cost calculator: how print cost and royalty are built
The formula for printing cost and royalty
Printing cost = fixed cost + page count × cost per page. Royalty = royalty rate × list price (excluding VAT) − printing cost.
Example amazon.de, black & white, regular trim, 300 pages: €0.75 + 300 × €0.012 = €4.35 printing cost. At a list price of €12.99 the rate is 60 %, so the royalty is 0.6 × €12.99 − €4.35 = €3.44 per copy.
Printing cost by marketplace
The table shows black & white on white or cream paper. Up to 108 pages a flat price applies, from 110 pages fixed cost plus a per-page price.
| Marketplace | Flat up to 108 pages (regular / large) | Regular from 110 pages | Large from 110 pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| amazon.com (USD) | $2.30 / $2.84 | $1.00 + $0.012 per page | $1.00 + $0.017 per page |
| amazon.de and EU (EUR) | €2.05 / €2.48 | €0.75 + €0.012 per page | €0.75 + €0.016 per page |
| amazon.co.uk (GBP) | £1.93 / £2.15 | £0.85 + £0.010 per page | £0.85 + £0.012 per page |
| amazon.ca (CAD) | $2.99 / $3.53 | $1.26 + $0.016 per page | $1.26 + $0.021 per page |
| amazon.com.au (AUD) | $4.74 / $5.28 | $2.42 + $0.022 per page | $2.42 + $0.027 per page |

Poland, Sweden and Japan as well as color printing are in the calculator. At exactly 110 pages KDP lists both prices; the calculator shows the higher one.
Color printing costs much more
Color applies to every page of the book. Example amazon.com, regular trim, 200 pages:
- Black & white: $3.40
- Standard color: $6.10
- Premium color: $14.00
Minimum list price and royalty rate
Below $9.99 (€9.99 in the euro marketplaces) KDP pays 50 %, from $9.99 on 60 %. The minimum list price is the price at which the royalty does not fall below zero.
- 100 pages ($2.30): from $4.60, because $2.30 ÷ 0.5.
- 300 pages ($4.60): from $9.20.
- 400 pages ($5.80): from $9.99, because the 60 % rate only applies from there.
Common mistakes in the calculation
- Entering the price with VAT although KDP keeps the list price net.
- Choosing a trim size just over the limit. Even 6.14 instead of 6.12 in of width makes the book large trim with a higher per-page price.
- Underestimating color: the ink type applies to the whole book, not page by page.
- Calculating with odd page counts. Printing always uses even numbers, so 301 pages become 302.
- Including expanded distribution. The calculator covers sales in the Amazon marketplaces.
KDP and bookstores
The calculator covers KDP. There is no public formula for bookstore printing. The words to pages calculator estimates the page count, the book spine calculator the spine width.
How to use it
- Choose marketplace, ink and trim size amazon.com in US dollars or the European marketplaces in euros.
- Enter page count and list price Enter the price with or without VAT; the calculator works without VAT.
- Read cost and royalty Printing cost, royalty per copy, royalty rate and the minimum list price for your book.
At a glance
- amazon.com, black & white, regular trim, from 110 pages: $1.00 + $0.012 per page.
- Royalty rate: 60 % from a list price of $9.99 or 9.99 €, 50 % below.
- Example: 200 pages at $14.99 cost $3.40 to print and pay $5.59 per copy.
How it is calculated
- Printing cost = fixed cost + page count × cost per page, depending on marketplace, ink and trim size. Black & white books up to 108 pages have a flat price.
- Royalty = royalty rate × list price − printing cost. The rate is 60 % from a list price of 9.99 US dollars or euros (7.99 pounds, 13.99 Canadian or Australian dollars, 1,000 yen, 40 złoty, 110 kronor), 50 % below.
- Values from KDP's paperback printing cost table, without VAT and without expanded distribution.

Questions
How much does KDP charge to print a 200-page book?
On amazon.com, black & white, regular trim: $1.00 + 200 × $0.012 = $3.40.
Why is my royalty lower than 60 %?
Because the printing cost is deducted from the 60 %. At $14.99 and $3.40 printing, you get 0.6 × 14.99 − 3.40 = $5.59.
Does the calculator cover bookstores?
No. The calculator covers Amazon KDP. There is no public formula for bookstore printing.
What is the minimum list price on KDP?
The price at which the royalty does not fall below zero: printing cost divided by the royalty rate. Below $9.99 the rate is 50 %, so for 200 pages on amazon.com: $3.40 / 0.5 = $6.80. The calculator shows it for your book.
What does it cost to print a paperback with color pages?
Color applies to the whole book. For 200 pages in regular trim on amazon.com, printing costs $3.40 in black & white, $6.10 in standard color ($1.00 + 200 × $0.0255) and $14.00 in premium color ($1.00 + 200 × $0.065). Standard color is not offered in every marketplace, for example not on amazon.com.au.
What does a book under 110 pages cost?
Black & white books up to 108 pages have a flat price: $2.30 in regular trim on amazon.com, €2.05 on amazon.de. From 110 pages on, fixed cost plus a per-page price applies.
What counts as large trim on KDP?
Anything wider than 6.12 in (155.5 mm) or taller than 9 in (228.6 mm). Even 6.14 × 9 in is large trim: 200 pages then cost $4.40 instead of $3.40 on amazon.com.
Are sales tax and shipping included in the printing cost?
No. Printing costs are net figures without shipping. The KDP list price is entered without VAT, and Amazon adds it in the store. On amazon.de that is 7 %: a list price of €12.99 becomes €13.90 in the store.
