What the conversion checks and fixes
What you get out of it
For printers that ask for it
Some printers and distributors want PDF/X-1a. This turns your PDF into one.
Check first
You see colours, fonts, transparencies and bleed before the conversion.
One price per file
No software to buy, no prepress to learn: upload, convert, download.
When you need a PDF/X-1a converter
Some printers and distributors ask for PDF/X-1a: CMYK colours, embedded fonts, no transparency. Upload your PDF and download the converted file.
Amazon KDP accepts normal print PDFs but names PDF/X-1a as its preferred format. IngramSpark and many printers require PDF/X-1a, because it leaves no room for surprises in print: no RGB, no missing fonts, no transparency.
What PDF/X-1a means
PDF/X-1a is an ISO standard that leaves a printer nothing to guess. The converter checks every point and only hands you the file if it passes.
CMYK only
Images and vectors in printing colours, no RGB. Very bright screen colours can turn a little duller, as they would in print anyway.
All fonts embedded
Every font is inside the file, in a format the standard allows.
No transparency
Transparent areas, soft masks and alpha channels are flattened.
Output intent and PDF/X label
The colour profile for the print and the PDF/X identifier are written into the file.
No comments or links
Annotations and links are removed; they have no place in a print file.

- Amazon KDP names PDF/X-1a as its preferred format but also accepts normal print PDFs with embedded fonts, bleed and flattened transparency.
- Our typesetting already delivers its print PDF as PDF/X-1a. Here you convert PDFs from other programs.

Questions about PDF/X-1a
Does KDP need PDF/X-1a?
It isn't mandatory: KDP also accepts standard print PDFs, but its help names PDF/X-1a as the preferred format. IngramSpark and many printers require PDF/X.
Doesn't the typesetting already deliver PDF/X?
Yes: our typesetting delivers the print PDF as PDF/X-1a, the format KDP prefers and IngramSpark requires.
This converter is for PDFs from other programs, such as Word or Affinity, when IngramSpark or a printer asks for PDF/X-1a.
Will my colours change?
Converting RGB to CMYK can make very bright colours a little duller. That is what the print will look like anyway.
